Typographic Character as Form
Through the exploration of form, I created and iterated on many compositions of character pairings, to create five unique compositions focusing on figure-ground relationships.

I began the project by looking at typefaces that had different curves, angles, open spaces, and stroke thickness. I liked how the fonts Futura PT Medium and Garamond Premier Pro, Medium Italic had interesting curves and open spaces that I could play with. I particularly liked the forms in the letters A, J, Q, R, and T.
After finding the fonts and letters I wanted the work with, I made 25 compositions for each letter using a 3 by 3 grid in Adobe Illustrator. I wanted to play with the different weights of the bold and oblique letters to show their contrast. I also liked playing with the negative spaces in each letter.
The 5 final compositions explore positive and negative space, and figure-ground relationships through cropping and scale changes.
